Kantha: a Bengal craft, made in Kolkata

Kantha began in Bengal as a way of layering soft cotton and holding it together with rows of small running stitches. The stitching creates the gentle ripple and texture that buyers recognise at once. Our artisans in Kolkata work in that tradition, by hand, on every scarf, stole and textile we make.

Because each piece is stitched by hand, no two are exactly alike. Stitch lines wander slightly and colours sit a little differently from one piece to the next. For your customers, that variation is the proof of handwork.

Kantha scarves wholesale for shops and brands

Ten Thousand Villages has sourced scarves from MKS since 2004, and our textile team supplies fair-trade shops, museum stores and fashion brands. You can start from our existing kantha styles in your own colourways, or develop an exclusive design with us.

Orders start at 50 pieces per style. Samples are usually ready in 5–7 days, and production takes 4–8 weeks. Hand-stitching takes time, so we plan kantha orders early with you around your season.

Frequently asked questions.

What is kantha stitch?

Kantha stitch is a simple running stitch, repeated in close rows across layers of cotton. It quilts the layers together and gives the fabric its soft, rippled surface. It comes from Bengal, where our Kolkata workshop is based, and it is done entirely by hand.

Will every kantha scarf in our order look the same?

They will match the approved sample in colour, size and design, but small differences in stitch line and texture are natural, because each piece is stitched by hand. Most retailers tell their customers this up front, as it is part of what makes kantha special.

What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

Our MOQ starts at 50 pieces per style, which makes MKS a practical partner for startups and small brands testing a first collection as well as established labels running repeat orders of several thousand units.

Can we order kantha scarves in our own colours?

Yes. Choose from our existing kantha styles and give us your colour references, or bring your own design. We make a sample for you to approve, usually in 5–7 days, before the order goes into production. Base cloth and thread colours can both be changed.

Are you a certified ethical manufacturer?

Yes. MKS has practised Fair Trade since 1994, and our workshop is Sedex audited. Artisans are paid above market rate, everyone employed is over 18, and leather comes from OEKO-TEX, LWG and GRS certified suppliers.
